Bourgogne Pinot Réserve matures in the cellars of the 15th century Château de Beaune, property of Bouchard Père & Fils. Chardonnay de Chardonnay : who remembers today that long before it became the name of a grape variety, Chardonnay was the name of a village located in the South of Burgundy, which existence goes back to millenaries ? This village bears signs of civilisation which go as far back as 3200 years before Jesus Christ, age of the first farmers of the Neolithic time. The name Chardonnay could come from land of thistles (chardon in French) and would refer, before other things, to barren land (as thistles grow on land which lays fallow). However, because of the success and the world expansion of the Chardonnay grape variety most of us have forgotten that the very word chardonnay also meant the name of a soil !
